What is Cement and Effective Component of Cement?

Dear friends in this Particular Article we will discuss Cement and its Components, So Read till the end Let’s Start…

Cement and its Properties:

Cement is a Binding Material made of Calcareous and Argelious Compounds.

Cement is an extremely fine material having adhesive and cohesive properties which provide a binding medium for the discrete ingredient of concrete (Fine Aggregate and Course Aggregate). It is a Binding Material made of Calcareous and Argelious Compounds.

Clinker is formed by the raw material consisting of Lime (CaO), Silicate (SiO2), Alumina (Al2O3), and Iron oxide (Fe2O3).

When cement is mixed with water it forms a paste that binds aggregate( fine and coarse Aggregate) together to form a hard durable mass called concrete.

The cement having is fine in nature is assumed to have a good setting property finally the grain of cement more is than the strength of cement.

The cement has good heat of hydration due to which it sets early as compared to other binding materials like lime Surkhi.

The cement gives an exothermic chemical reaction which produces heat when comes in contact with water.

The specific gravity of cement is assumed as 3.15

Joseph Asp din manufactured cement and called it Portland cement because when it was hard it produced a material resembling stone from the quarries near “Portland in England”.

During the grinding of clinker (“Gypsum or Plaster of Paris”) is added to prevent flash setting or quick setting of cement the amount of gypsum is about 3-5% of the weight of the clinker Gypsum also improves the soundness of cement.

There are some common calcareous materials are

  • Limestone
  • Chalk
  • Marine
  • Sale
  • Sarl etc.

There are some common Argillus materials are

  • Clay
  • Sale
  • Slate
  • Blast furnace slag etc.

Properties Of Cement:

  • The ideal net weight of one bag of cement bag is 50 kg and a volume of approx 0.035 m³.
  • The density of Cement is 1440 Kg/m³.
  • The specific gravity of cement is assumed as 3.15

Components of cement

  • Lime (62% to 67% )
  • Silka (17% to 25% )
  • Alumina( 3% to 8% )
  • Gypsum (3% to  4% )
  • Iron oxide (0.5% to 6% )
  • Magnesium oxide (5% to 6% )
  • Sulphur  (2.5% to 3.5% )
  • Alkali (0.8% to 1%)
